Just when it appeared the Broncos had cleared their midseason slide, along came the Oakland Raiders .
The Broncos' AFC West rival had not scored more than 18 points in any of their previous seven games, yet the Raiders had little trouble moving the ball against the inconsistent Broncos, stunning Denver with a 31-10 win.
The Broncos lost the turnover battle, committing two without getting any in return, and could not stop the Oakland running attack of Justin Fargas and rookie Darren McFadden. The Broncos also gave up the game's key play on special teams, allowing an 89-yard punt return for a touchdown to Johnnie Lee Higgins late in the second quarter that gave Oakland a seven-point halftime lead.
Fargas had his first 100-yard rushing game of the season and McFadden scored on two short runs for Oakland. The Broncos could not find any consistency on offense as quarterback Jay Cutler endured his toughest game of the season, completing 16-of-37 passes with one interception.
Oakland quarterback JaMarcus Russell, inconsistent all season, dissected the Broncos defense for 10 completions in 11 attempts.
FIRST QUARTER: Raiders 0, Broncos 0
The Broncos defense opens strongly, forcing a three-and-out on the game's first possession, but Denver's offense proves to be its own worst enemy in the opening 15 minutes.
The Broncos' first drive begins with promise as Peyton Hillis escapes on a short pass to convert a third-and-14 and Oakland helps out with a roughing-the-passer penalty.
Denver moves inside the Oakland 10-yard line on a 21-yard catch-and-run by Brandon Marshall.
But a fumbled handoff exchange between Hillis and quarterback Jay Cutler ruins the scoring opportunity.
Former Broncos receiver Ashley Lelie coaxes boos with a 22-yard catch on third down for Oakland, but a Raiders penalty helps the Broncos force a punt. The Broncos move into Oakland territory on a 28-yard Cutler pass to Darrell Jackson on the final play of the quarter.
SECOND QUARTER: Raiders 10, Broncos 3
The Broncos advance only a few yards after Jackson's catch, forcing a 47-yard field-goal attempt by Matt Prater that sails wide right.
Oakland takes over and puts together its best drive of the half, getting an 11-yard run by rookie running back Darren McFadden and a 30-yard pass from JaMarcus Russell to tight end Zach Miller that gives Oakland a first-and-goal.
The Broncos defense makes a stand, getting a big second-down hit by Karl Paymah against Justin Fargas that helps force the Raiders to settle for a 26-yard field goal by Sebastian Janikowski and a 3-0 lead.
Denver answers with its most efficient drive, converting three third downs, including two on passes to Brandon Stokley, that sets up Prater for a 44-yard field goal that ties the score 3-3.
Denver forces a quick Oakland punt and gets an opportunity to add points before halftime, but disaster strikes after the Broncos are forced to punt.
The Raiders' Johnnie Lee Higgins takes off on an 89-yard touchdown return that gives Oakland a 10-3 lead.
A 20-yard reception by Marshall and two Oakland penalties give Prater another shot on the final play of the half, but he misses the 43-yard attempt.
THIRD QUARTER: Raiders 17, Broncos 10
The Broncos attempt to get back on track, taking the kickoff and putting together a 13-play, 85-yard drive.
Aided by Oakland's third roughing-the-passer penalty, Hillis caps the drive with a 6-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-1that ties the score 10-10.
Oakland answers immediately as a 51-yard catch by Lelie against cornerback Dre Bly helps set up a 1-yard touchdown run by McFadden that reasserts the Raiders' seven-point lead.
The Broncos sputter on their next drive, getting no yards on a Hillis run and two incomplete passes, while the Raiders continue to move the ball.
Mixing runs by McFadden and Fargas, the Raiders make a first down on the Broncos 30 as the quarter ends.
FOURTH QUARTER: Raiders 31, Broncos 10
A pass interference penalty against Marquand Manuel on the first play gives Oakland a first-and-goal, and Lelie continues to annoy the Invesco Field crowd with a 4-yard touchdown catch that gives Oakland a 24-10 lead.
Denver's meltdown continues on its next possession. Two plays after an 18-yard pass to tight end Tony Scheffler is reversed on a video review, Cutler is intercepted by Oakland linebacker Thomas Howard at the Broncos 43.
The Raiders keep the ball on the ground the entire drive, getting another 1-yard touchdown run from McFadden that extends their lead to 31-10 and seals the Broncos' fate.
