Sports talk radio lost one of its hottest NFL topics when Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones emphatically voiced his allegiance to quarterback Tony Romo on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters at the NFL owners' meetings in Dana Point, Calif., Jones pulled the plug on the Romo-for-Jay Cutler chatter, a fantasy swap that's kept caller lines around the nation humming for weeks.

"I wouldn't trade Tony for anybody," Jones said.

Columnists, bloggers and fans on message boards also have offered their takes on whether they'd swap Romo for the embattled Denver quarterback. On Tuesday, a Google search of "Romo-for-Cutler trade" revealed 698,000 references on the Web.

"It was the perfect storm for talk radio," Peter Burns of KTKR-AM "The Ticket 760" said. "Everybody had an opinion on it. A lot of people didn't like it because Cutler has a chip on his shoulder. Others were against it because they want to see what the Cowboys have in Romo. A lot of people said it will be a make-or-break year for him."

But only Jones' opinion matters. And he dismissed the trade talk with a ringing endorsement of Romo, who has come under fire for being a "celebrity" quarterback.

"I've always been so amused about any talk of Tony and his focus on Football and his work ethic," ESPN.com quoted Jones as saying. "Tony's boring. He won't talk about anything but Football and the Cowboys and how to move the ball and what plays we can run.

"I don't know if I've ever been around anybody that's just into Football. I wish he'd talk more about spicy things, but I can't get him to."

Jones reiterated that releasing Terrell Owens was the centerpiece of a master plan to make Romo as comfortable as possible. Owens frequently complained last season he wasn't getting the ball enough and even accused Romo of favoring tight end Jason Witten.

"We want to do everything we can to have Romo play his best and (we) made the decision to release Terrell," the Dallas Morning News' Web site quoted Jones as saying. "(The release of Owens) gives Tony a better chance to play at the optimum for the Cowboys."

Fans were split on whether Owens' absence will help or hurt Romo, Burns said. Owens signed a one-year deal with Buffalo shortly after the Cowboys released him nearly three weeks ago.

"Some fans think that without T.O., it's going to be bad for Romo," Burns said. "Others said that with the bad seed out of there, Romo will be better."

Burns said he's looking forward to checking in with listeners today.

"Whenever Jerry Jones opens his mouth, I've got four lines full of people wanting to talk about it," Burns said.
