
IRVING - Mike Shanahan's surprising dismissal from Denver could benefit Jason Garrett.
Garrett will interview with the Broncos next week after they received permission to talk with the Cowboys' assistant head coach/offensive coordinator, however, he has turned down Detroit's offer to interview for its vacancy, according to multiple sources.
The Lions had received permission to speak with Garrett earlier in the week.
Last year, Garrett turned down Baltimore's offer to become its head coach. He also interviewed with Atlanta.
The Cowboys offense dropped from third in the NFL in 2007 to 13th in '08 with quarterback Tony Romo missing three games because of a fractured pinkie.
Denver owner Pat Bowlen got an up-close look at Garrett the last two seasons with the Cowboys and Broncos working against each other in training camp and playing in the preseason.
Other reported candidates for the Denver job include New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and Tampa Bay assistant Raheem Morris, who was defensive backs coach in 2008 and is set to be defensive coordinator in 2009.
Cowboys wide receivers coach Ray Sherman has received interest from St. Louis, according to a source, but the Rams have yet to seek formal permission to talk with him.
