PLAYER NOTES
--WR Edell Shepherd was put on injured reserve after tearing an ACL on the first day of camp. Shepherd had a chance to make the team as a backup receiver.
--WR Taylor Jacobs was signed after Shepherd's injury. Jacobs spend a couple of months with the team last season, knows the offense and can play special teams.
--DT Carlton Powell tore his Achilles' tendon in an offseason workout and will miss the entire season. The fifth-round pick could have provided depth on the defensive line.
--OT Ryan Clady signed a five-year contract that could be worth as much as $17.5 million on the morning of Denver's first training camp practice. The first-round pick got $11.5 million guaranteed.
--DT Kenny Peterson has been with the first-team defense in the early days of camp, which is a bit of a surprise. Alvin McKinley and Marcus Thomas shared that spot in offseason practices.
BATTLE OF THE WEEK: Darrell Jackson vs. Keary Colbert for starting WR - Jackson has the initial edge. He has lined up with the starting offense and Colbert has been with the second team. Colbert was signed to a bigger contract, but Jackson has a longer track record. Jackson is coming off a poor season in San Francisco, but the poor quarterback play was a legitimate reason for his poor statistics.
OTHER BATTLE FRONTS: The starting right tackle battle between Chris Kuper and Ryan Harris hasn't materialized because Kuper has had to fill in for Montrae Holland and right guard. Holland came in overweight and hasn't practiced. Kuper could end up battling for a starting spot at right guard if Harris impresses at tackle.
At the backup tailback position, Andre Hall has taken a lead over Michael Pittman and Ryan Torain. Hall is often forgotten about but is a talented running back and has some experience in the offense.
Niko Koutouvides and Nate Webster are still in a battle for the starting middle linebacker position. Koutouvides took the first two days of camp with the first team, then Webster got a shot with the starters on the third day.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK: CB Domonique Foxworth. Foxworth has made plays all over the field as Denver's nickel cornerback. He filled it at safety most of the last two seasons, and is comfortable being back as a full-time cornerback. He has a big lead over Karl Paymah for the nickel cornerback spot.
ROOKIE REPORT: Ryan Clady has acquitted himself fine as Denver's starting left tackle. He has appeared comfortable since taking the job right after being drafted. ... Eddie Royal has impressed the staff with his work at receiver, and coach Mike Shanahan said he thinks Royal will contribute on offense this season. ... Fullback Peyton Hillis is drawing some attention with his hard-nosed style. It wouldn't be a surprise if he started at fullback for the Broncos at some point this year. ... Guard Kory Lichtensteiger didn't practice much in the offseason because he was recovering from a shoulder injury, and he hasn't stood out in practice yet. Most offensive linemen need a year to learn Denver's offensive system. ... Tailback Ryan Torain has made some nice runs, but also had a fumble during a drill early in camp.
INJURY REPORT: WR Edell Shepherd will miss the season with a knee injury. ... TE Chad Mustard is on the physically unable to perform list because of a hamstring injury. He could be back sometime in the preseason.
