UNIT-BY-UNIT ANALYSIS

QUARTERBACKS: Starter -- Jay Cutler. Backups -- Patrick Ramsey, Darrell Hackney.

In camp, the coaches will work on all aspects of Cutler's game as he enters his third season. Cutler has always been fast picking up the nuances of the offense and should take another big step this season. Ramsey is entrenched as the backup. The Broncos don't often carry three quarterbacks, so there will be some pressure on Hackney to perform.

RUNNING BACKS: Starters -- RB Selvin Young, FB Cecil Sapp. Backups -- Michael Pittman, Andre Hall, Ryan Torain, Anthony Alridge, FB Mike Bell, FB Peyton Hillis.

Young enters training camp as the starter, but Pittman, Hall and Torain won't concede that he will be the featured back on opening day. The competition at tailback should be strong, but as long as Young performs as he is capable, he should win the job. He needs to show the coaches he can get through camp healthy, because injuries have been a knock against him. Rookie Torain will be one of the more interesting players in camp, because he is a tough inside runner who can finally show what he can do with pads on against pro competition.

TIGHT ENDS: Starter -- Daniel Graham. Backups -- Tony Scheffler, Nate Jackson, Chad Mustard, Brett Pierce, Mike Leach.

The Broncos will closely watch Scheffler, who dealt with foot problems for the second straight offseason. The good news is, unlike last year, he should be ready for the start of camp. Graham would like to be a bigger part of the passing game, but his superior blocking is his strength. Jackson had a great camp last year, and could fight for playing time again.

WIDE RECEIVERS: Starters -- Brandon Marshall, Keary Colbert. Backups -- Brandon Stokley, Darrell Jackson, Glenn Martinez, Eddie Royal, Samie Parker, Marquay McDaniel, Edell Shepherd, Lorne Sam, Clifford Russell.

All eyes will be on Marshall, as he tries to show his injured arm is healthy. He cut it badly in an offseason accident and couldn't catch any live passes through the offseason camps as he rehabilitated. Also, the No. 2 spot will be a true battle. Colbert probably has the edge, but don't count out Jackson, who is coming off a poor year with the 49ers. Second-round pick Royal has impressed the coaches and could make a push for playing time on offense in camp. Stokley is set at the slot receiver position as long as he is healthy.

OFFENSIVE LINE: Starters -- LT Ryan Clady, LG Ben Hamilton, C Tom Nalen, RG Montrae Holland, RT Chris Kuper. Backups -- C Casey Wiegmann, T Ryan Harris, T Erik Pears, G/C P.J. Alexander, C/G Kory Lichtensteiger, G Dylan Gandy, G Mitch Erickson, T Tyler Polumbus.

Clady seemed to pick things up well in the offseason camps, but his big tests will come with the pads on against professional defensive ends. He looks the part, and should win the starting left tackle job. Hamilton and Nalen each ended last season on injured reserve, so they need to show they're healthy. The main battle will be at right tackle, where Kuper spent most of the offseason as the starter, but Harris could push him. Pears, the starter at right tackle last season, has moved to the left side to back up Clady.

DEFENSIVE LINE: Starters -- LE John Engelberger, T Dewayne Robertson, T Alvin McKinley, RE Elvis Dumervil. Backups -- T Marcus Thomas, E Tim Crowder, E Jarvis Moss, E Ebenezer Ekuban, T Carlton Powell, T Josh Mallard, E Larry Birdine, E Paul Carrington, T Kenny Peterson, T Steven Harris, E Nic Clemons.

Three second-year linemen -- Crowder, Moss and Thomas -- will be a huge story in camp. The Broncos are expecting big things from that trio, even though none worked as a true starter in offseason camps. That could change depending on their performance. Moss is under some pressure after struggling most of his rookie season before breaking his leg. He said this offseason he feels healthy. There will be a fight for roster spots among some of the linemen on the second and third team.

LINEBACKERS: Starters -- WLB D.J. Williams, MLB Niko Koutouvides, SLB Boss Bailey. Backups -- MLB Nate Webster, OLB Jamie Winborn, MLB Jordan Beck, OLB Louis Green, MLB Spencer Larsen, OLB Wesley Woodyard.

The major question with this group is if Koutouvides can beat out Webster, a starter on the outside last year. The two split time with the first-team defense at middle linebacker this offseason. The Broncos signed Koutouvides with the notion he would start in the middle. Either way, Williams will stay on the outside, barring something unusual. He played the middle last year but his natural spot is on the weak side. Special-teams contributions will determine which of the backups make the roster.

DEFENSIVE BACKS: Starters -- LCB Champ Bailey, RCB Dre Bly, SS John Lynch, FS Hamza Abdullah. Backups -- CB/S Domonique Foxworth, CB Karl Paymah, CB Jack Williams, S Marlon McCree, S Marquand Manuel, S Roderick Rogers, S Josh Barrett, CB Christian Morton, CB Lamont Reid.

There is some talent among the backups, and they'll be fighting for positioning on the depth chart. Paymah had a solid year as a nickel corner, but Foxworth was playing safety. Foxworth is back at cornerback and was the nickel corner all offseason. McCree and Manuel were signed in free agency to add depth, and they will push Lynch and Abdullah. The coaches could spend camp trying to figure out what combinations at safety will work best on running downs and passing downs.

SPECIAL TEAMS: K Matt Prater, P Sam Paulescu, LS Mike Leach, KR
Eddie Royal, K Garrett Hartley, P Brett Kern.

Prater seems the clear favorite to replace Jason Elam at kicker, but he needs to perform during camp and preseason games. Hartley will get his chances to kick as well. The competition between Paulescu and Kern seems more wide open, and their performances before the season opener will determine who sticks. Royal would have to struggle in August to lose his job returning kicks.
