If there were any doubt, the Broncos now know they must make drastic improvements on defense if they want to make the playoffs in 2009.
Denver allowed 52 points in a must-win game against San Diego, unable to stop the pass or the run. The Broncos forced only one punt in Sunday's game.
"When you look up at the scoreboard and see 52 points, it hurts," cornerback Dre Bly said.
Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said he wasn't considering replacing defensive coordinator Bob Slowik. The changes will have to come from free agency and the draft. The Broncos were conservative in free agency last year but might be willing to make a splash if they can get a superior pass rusher.
"Defensively, we've got a lot of work to do," Shanahan said.
The Broncos need to upgrade the defensive line and safety position. The offense could be one of the best in the NFL, but Denver showed during its late-season collapse that it needs to give quarterback Jay Cutler some help.
