In the history of the NFL, only one player has caught more passes in a game than Brandon Marshall did against San Diego on Sunday.
Marshall caught 18 balls for 166 yards in his return from a suspension. Despite missing the first game, Marshall had three more catches than anyone else in the NFL at the end of the Sunday games in Week 2.
"Like I told you guys when I first got back from my suspension, my goals are still the same," Marshall said. "All of my goals are to break all the records."
Marshall is now tied for second-most catches in a game in NFL history, and would have had a chance to tie or break Terrell Owens' record of 20 catches in a game had Denver gone to overtime instead of trying a two-point conversion for the win near the end of regulation.
Marshall would have had 19 catches, but one catch was taken off the board when Denver chose to accept a defensive holding penalty and an automatic first down.
Marshall might not make 18 catches again this year, but he is blossoming into one of the best receivers in the NFL. His 55 catches over the past five games, dating back to last year, is the most in NFL history for a five-game stretch. The Broncos knew Marshall was having a big game, but nobody realized the extent of his day.
"I have no idea how many catches he had, how many? Eighteen?" Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said after the game. "Not bad for your first game back."
"I was guessing 15 or 16," quarterback Jay Cutler said. "I mean, 18, he's a big man out there."
