Jay Cutler Puts His Leader Cap on and Criticizes Brandon Marshall

Filed under: Broncos, AFC WestEarlier today, we shared Mike Shanahan’s belief that Brandon Marshall was a “real good kid” despite a string of incidents that would have you thinking the opposite. Shanahan’s comments would seem to serve as the team’s party line on Marshall except for the fact that Jay Cutler keeps on making a point to call Marshall on the carpet for falling short of his expectations.

After Marshall injured his arm and lied about how it happened, Cutler said Marshall was not “his favorite person” because “it was always something with him.” Now after the revelation of another domestic violence arrest and a relatively innocuous traffic stop, Cutler’s reiterating his doubts about Marshall.
“Once or twice - you could live with that. You say people make mistakes, but I mean it’s been three, four, five times. I don’t know how many times he’s at right now, so I don’t know what’s gonna happen. I don’t know if Mike’s going to do anything. I don’t know if the league’s going to do anything. I just hope he gets his act together, cause it’d be a shame for him to waste all that talent.”
I’m not sure how Marshall feels but the rest of the Broncos should be happy to read that quote. Team leaders hold the other players accountable for their actions, on and off the field, especially when the latter can affect his availability and, therefore, the team’s chances at success.
